The misuse of antibiotics on factory farms helps animals grow faster and endure crowded, dirty, stressful conditions — while also breeding antibiotic-resistant bacteria, or “superbugs.” Nearly two million Americans per year develop hospital-acquired infections, resulting in 99,000 deaths — the vast majority of which are due to antibacterial-resistant pathogens.
The Food and Drug Administration is under intense pressure from giant agribusiness and pharmaceutical industries, and is dragging its feet on protecting consumers.
